This is our latest version of the thermal profiling probe. Unlike our steel probe that has the thermisters embedded withiin brass buttons along the length of the probe, this probe has the sensors embedded within and extremely durable conductive silicone resin. This prevents some of the wear that the brass buttons may endure.
Your windrow profiling probe allows you to measure the temperature profile of a compost windrow. The thermistors are embedded in thermally conductive silicone resin in the brass buttons which have been press fit into the stainless steel thick wall tube at 10“ intervals. The internal wiring leads from the 4 thermistors along the probe to a connector at the handle. The included cable with 4 color coded RCA phono plug connectors can be attached to an optional digital readout multi-channel, or multi-channel logging/printing thermometer.
If a compost pile is in the breakdown phase and performing in a generally acceptable manner, the following conclusions can be considered based on the associated observations about the temperature profile:
If profile shows that the temperature:
then the pile may need:
is lower than expected in the center region
to be aerated by turning
is lower than expected in the outer portion
additional moisture incorporated while turning
is 150°F or greater at any place in the pile
to be turned
varies by more than 2°F immediately after turning
a more effective method of aeration
Please note: This temperature probe is sensitive to changes within seconds, however it can take up to 20 minutes to reach a stable temperature readout, so please leave within the compost pile for at least that length of time.
